Pupils at Kennel Lane school in Bracknell will learn how to build and harness renewable energy infrastructure, as part of a brand-new completely free education programme from SSE Energy Solutions called SSE Climate Connect.

This is the first of ten national school partnerships between Rewise Learning and SSE Energy Solutions, the partnership was brokered by sponsorship agency Reg&Co.

Workshops put together in partnership with Rewise Learning will see secondary school pupils gain valuable experience building and operating a model wind turbine, and primary school pupils learn about climate change and write their own song about it. The free education workshops will be held at schools across the UK with learning resources available online to all.

As part of the STEM workshop, secondary pupils will team up to build and test their own wind turbines, including the opportunity to experiment with different turbine blades and learn how factors like the direction of a turbine can affect its efficiency.

The SSE Climate Connect workshops will also teach primary school pupils how to write a song about climate change and renewable energy, based on learnings from their workshops. The workshops will include a mobile recording studio brought to Kennel Lane School where students will learn what creates an emotional connection between a song and its listener, and then work with other pupils to write their own music.

As well as full-day workshops with the award-winning Rewise Learning team, the SSE Climate Connect education programme will provide free publicly available lesson plans and learning resources for teachers and pupils. The programme and workshops are all complementary to ongoing curriculum work.

Nikki Flanders, Managing Director of Energy Customer Solutions at SSE, said: “I’m proud to bring our brand-new education programme to pupils in Bracknell. We have been working on our schools programme all year and are excited to be partnering with Rewise Learning to bring this practical and interactive workshop to pupils here at Kennel Lane school, and other schools across the country this term.

“We know that the next generation of engineers and leaders could be in the very classrooms we visit, and we want to do our part to empower them to find their passion and consider a future in renewables.”

Nathan John, CEO of Rewise Learning said: “We see first-hand that workshops like this have a profound effect on the confidence of pupils, and how they see their own role in creating a better world. For many pupils, workshops like this with SSE Energy Solutions could give them the boost they need to consider a career in the renewable energy sector and really believe in themselves.

“We are excited to work with SSE Energy Solutions to take these curriculum friendly workshops across the country and continue to inspire young people about the power of renewables.”
